As early as the 1880s, fraternities and sororities competed with boarding houses to provide lodging for students of the University of Nebraska, long before NU opened its first dormitory in 1931, Raymond Hall. The early "Greek" chapters were typically located in large houses, often some distance from campus. Beginning in 1917, buildings designed as chapter houses in various Period Revival styles were constructed near the east edge of campus on R, S, Vine, and North 16th Streets. By the 1940s, over two dozen fraternities and sororities formed a strong south and east boundary to campus commonly referred to as "Greek Row."
