Books
Soft bound books can be recycled at any of the City's drop-off locations in the Mixed Paper recycling bins. For hard bound books, like encyclopedias, remove the hard binding and recycle the pages within the book. Hard bindings cannot be recycled; please dispose of these in your regular trash.
Building Materials
A new building materials concept in Lincoln is EcoStores. This business collects and resells quality, salvageable construction materials, equipment and systems. Many of the products are high-quality and virtually unused. EcoStores features new, unused overstock items from building retailers as well as materials and fixtures collected by deconstruction teams from the Nebraska Center for Sustainable Construction (NCSC). The general public is welcome to donate as well. Donors will get a receipt for tax deductions.
Popular inventory items include doors, windows, wood trim, boards, paneling and flooring; office furniture including desks, dividers and file/storage cabinets; kitchen and bathroom fixtures include sinks, tubs and cabinets; electrical fittings and fixtures include ceiling fans; a wide range of commercial shelving; and many other building and construction-related items.

Computer Equipment
Computer equipment has more than 1,000 materials, many of which are highly toxic. The cathode ray tubes (CRTs) in some computer monitors contain enough lead to pose health hazards to humans and animals. Circuit boards, batteries, switches/housing, and printed wiring boards contain mercury. Chromium is used as corrosion protection of untreated and galvanized steel plates and as decorative and hardener for steel housing. When these toxic metals accumulate in the environment, they have a high acute and chronic toxic effect on plants, animals, and humans.
50% of a computer is made of plastic, 30% is steel, 10% is aluminum, 10% are boards and miscellaneous wire, 1% is gold. Over 97% of the materials in a computer are recyclable.
There are three options for recycling computer equipment: Refurbish, Reuse, or Recycle.
Refurbish:
Depending on the age and condition of the computer equipment, some businesses may buy it and refurbish if needed for resale.

Also, households (not businesses) can dispose of computer equipment at the 48th Street Transfer Station for a fee or in regular trash. However, check with your waste hauler for handling fees.
Businesses must use an electronics recycler or donate usable computer equipment. There are several companies that accept computer waste for a fee. See listings for recycling above.
Printer cartridges can be recycled at Staples, Office Depot and Cartridge World; many smaller independent computer stores will also collect printer cartridges for recycling.
Construction & Demolition
Since Lincoln is a growing community, construction and demolition (C & D) debris is a major component of the City's total waste stream. Concrete and asphalt recycling by local firms recycles almost three times the amount of C & D wastes used as beneficial fill by the City.
C & D waste includes concrete rubble, clean soil, brick or similar material. Clean construction and demolition debris may be taken to the 48th Street Transfer Station for a fee of $4 per ton. A few private contractors do accept concrete and asphalt (and asphalt shingles) that are clean of contaminants, such as scrap metal or dirt, and separated by types. Fees may apply. Call first to make arrangements.

Paints
(Latex & Oil)
Liquid paint is prohibited from disposal in the landfill and regular garbage.
Oil based paint must be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. Call the Health Department at 441-8021 or check the Health Department website "Household Waste Concerns", under the "Household Hazardous Waste Collections" link, for days and locations.
EcoStores will accept oil and latex paint for free and can be reached at 477-3606.
Some latex paint can be donated or reused. Check with local charities, schools, and youth programs, such as the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Paint can be used to decorate props for a play, add color to a play room, or coat shelves. Also, each year the Health Department sponsors a Latex Paint Exchange. Good, usable latex paint in quantities of at least ½ can will be accepted. Call 441-8021 for more information.
Latex paint can be disposed of in your regular trash. However, it must be completely dry before disposing.
- For small quantities (less than 1 inch in bottom), take lids off cans and let paint dry. Discard paint in the trash. Be sure to remove lids from cans so refuse haulers can see that the paint has hardened.
- Large quantities of latex paint can be dried by pouring a 1-inch layer of paint into a plastic lined or cardboard box. When dry, another layer of paint can be poured. Do this until the container is empty. Add an absorbent, such as clay-based cat litter or strips of newspaper, to speed up the process. When dry, this combination of absorbent and paint should be put in a trash bag and placed in the garbage.
- Latex Paint brushes and rollers should be wiped with a paper towel or rag, and then cleaned in the sink. Use ample water to dilute the paint. Put used paper towels in the garbage. If using a disposable brush or roller, let dry, then place in trash.
