Day Captain, Kim McKay

Kim McKay is the Office Assistant for Lincoln Fire & Rescue’s Training division. Her career with the department began as a firefighter in 1988. She was promoted to Fire Apparatus Operator assigned to Engine 8 in 1995. She moved to the Training Division as Drill Master in 1997 and was promoted to Captain. She has received numerous commendations for her involvement with programs and activities such as the Media Day Live Burn, the Re-Accreditation Process, the FF/Paramedic Engine Program, a WMD exercise, and an Emergency Management Training. She was the recipient of a Unit Performance Award with Engine 8, and was awarded Firefighter of the Year by the American Legion in 1999.

Kim has an associates Degree in Fire Science and an Associates Degree in Respiratory Therapy both from Southeast Community College, Lincoln, NE. She has been to the National Fire Academy and completed classes on Training Program Management, Interpersonal Dynamics, and three of the four years of the Executive Fire Officer Program to date. She is a member of NETF-1 Urban Search and Rescue Team and holds a position of Plans. She responded to the DeBruce Grain Elevator Response in Sedgwick County, KS, in 1998, Hurricane Katrina, twice, in 2006, and Greensburg Kansas in 2007.

Kim is involved with various committees and has attended many training sessions. Her involvement includes being the Regional and National Co-chair for Training Resources and Data Exchange (TRADE), of the National Fire Academy, for the last ten years. She has been Chairperson for the City Wide Safety Committee for the City of Lincoln three times and is still a member of the committee, the LFR Safety Committee; she chairs the LFR Awards Committee and is a member of the Advisory Committee for the Fire Science Program for Southeast Community College. She has also been a member of Leadership Link for 10 years.

In September of 2008, Kim transferred from Fire Captain of the LFR Training Division to Office Assistant for the LFR Training Division.
