The Neighborhood Geographic Information System is a joint endeavor between
the University and the city's four community cultural centers. The
University and the centers are developing a database containing
statistical and geographic information relevant to the minority
community served by the centers. Faculty and students participate
in training cultural center staff while developing the system and
provide technical support. The team also works with cultural center
staff to identify and analyze issues affecting their neighborhoods.
The result will be a community-based database that will enable local
cultural centers to obtain and use information available through
numerous sources to more effectively participate in public debates
and improve their ability to influence outcomes about policies affecting
their members.
