Home Disposal of Syringes & Needles

The rules and options for disposal of used needles and syringes may vary from county to county and from state to state. If you live outside of Lancaster County, Nebraska, please check with local or state health or environmental agencies for information about regulations and disposal options in your area.

When discarding your used needles & syringes, take these precautions:

  • Recap your needles only if medication is self-administered.
  • Place needles in a leakproof, puncture-resistant container; a heavy plastic laundry detergent jug works well.
  • Fill the container 2/3 full of needles.
  • Put the lid on & seal with masking tape.
  • Label the container "Infectious Waste" or "Bio-Hazard Waste."
  • Place the container in the trash.
  • Never put used needles & syringes in recycling containers.

Your family, neighbors (especially children), garbage hauler, & landfill workers will thank you for making their environment a safer place in which to live & work.
