Supporting Students with Diabetes

There are great resources available for schools who have students with diabetes. They reflect the nation’s need for school policies, an informed school leadership, and coordinated communication between school nurses, parents and medical practitioners. They address the need to have students with diabetes assisted with their self-care and to have every school prepared to deliver adequate first-line emergency assistance when it is required.

National Diabetes Education Program (of the National Institutes for Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) released the consensus document: Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed - A Guide for School Personnel. The 88 page resource includes an update on diabetes; key responsibilities and activities for school staff, parents and students; sample management and emergency plans; and information about pertinent federal laws. Copies can be downloaded or ordered from http://ndep.nih.gov.

American Diabetes Association (ADA) released Diabetes Care Tasks at School: What Key Personnel Need to Know. This downloadable PowerPoint presentation was designed for health care professionals with expertise in diabetes to train school nurses and other school personnel designated to perform diabetes care tasks at school. Please visit http://www.diabetes.org for more information.

National Association of School Nurses adopted a curriculum from PADRE Foundation for training school nurses in diabetes content and direct care skills as well as for use in training unlicenced assistive personnel. Please visit http://padrefoundation.org and once you enter the sight, select ‘nurses’ from the navigation window in the top left corner.
