West Nile Virus

Increases in West Nile Virus cases have some parents concerned about their children’s health while at school. The West Nile Virus is spread by mosquitos carrying the virus. People can avoid mosquito bites by limiting their time outside during dawn and dusk, prime times for mosquitos to feed. These are typically times when students are not at school.

DEET is the active ingredient in insect repellants. DEET is listed as N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide or N, N-diethyl-3-methylbenamide on products. Insect repellants containing DEET can be harmful if misused or overused. Parents should keep the following in mind:

Applications of DEET products at school should be treated the same as other over-the-counter medications. School nurses should be consulted, and refer to the school’s over-the-counter drug policy prior to students using products from home.

For more information on West Nile Virus, call the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department at (402) 441-8053.
