Charles H. Gere

Charles H. Gere
1838-1904

Charles Gere was born in New York and came to Nebraska at the end of the Civil War to become an attorney. He was instrumental in the selection of Lincoln as the state capital, and introduced bills in the legislature that created the University of Nebraska and the State Historical Society. Gere founded Lincoln's first newspaper, originally called the Commonwealth (now the Journal Star). He was the first president of the Lincoln Reading and Library Association, which later became the free, public Lincoln City Libraries.
