Public Encouraged To View Meeting On Gas Rates

Mayor Don Wesely and members of the City Council encourage the public to view a televised informational meeting on natural gas rates at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 22 on 5 CITY-TV, government access cable channel 5.

The City Council will have a presentation from Peoples Natural Gas on the history of gas rates, the reasons todayís commodity prices have increased dramatically, factors other than the gas cost that affect a customerís bill, and some possible solutions to the situation. Presenters from Peoples will include Alan Hersch, Community Relations Director; Glenn Dee, Director of Regulatory Affairs; and Don Nordell, Customer Operations Director for Lincoln.

A news release from Peoples said natural gas billing rates for the companyís customers in Lincoln are $1.23 per therm (100 cubic feet), compared to 46 center per therm a year ago. That means a residential customer using 186 therms of gas this month would pay about $237, an increase of $142 over the January 2000 bill.
