Preliminary work on phase two of the East “O” Street widening project will continue next week. Phase two will widen East “O” from two to three lanes in each direction from Eastridge Drive to Wedgewood Drive and will include work on 66th and 70th streets.
The outside lane of southbound 70th Street will close Wednesday, February 19 between “P” and “L” streets to make room for crews and equipment removing curbs and medians. Driveways on 70th to Meridian Park and HyVee may be closed at times as part of this work.
Crews will install temporary asphalt paving on “O” Street and 70th Street beginning Thursday, February 20. Work will begin on “O” Street just east of Lyncrest Drive and will move to the east. The inside lanes of both eastbound and westbound “O” Street will remain closed for this work. When “O” Street temporary paving is finished, crews will continue temporary paving on 70th Street, beginning at “P” Street and moving south to “L” Street.
The temporary pavement will provide a new traffic lane to be used when traffic shifts to the south side of “O” Street and the west side of 70th Street on March 17. The shifts will allow for demolition and reconstruction of the north side of “O” and the east side of 70th.
The intersections of 66th and “O” and 70th and “O” will remain open at all times.
Phase one of the project, completed in September, widened East “O” from 52nd Street to Eastridge Drive and included reconstruction on 56th Street and Cotner Boulevard.
The latest information on the project can be found on the 24-Hour East “O” Street Information Line, 441-0432, and on the City website, www.lincoln.ne.gov .
