Work resumed today on the new Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln's West Haymarket area. Construction was suspended Tuesday, December 20 because of an issue with the reinforcing steel or "rebar" from the supplier, Drake-Williams of Omaha. The one-week delay was necessary to allow time for replacement rebar to be fabricated and delivered.
The builders - Mortenson Construction and Hampton Enterprises - also have modified their on-site inspection process to ensure that all rebar received is bent to the proper radius. In addition, Terracon, the West Haymarket Joint Public Agency's independent testing firm for Pinnacle Bank Arena, also will confirm that delivered material conforms to industry standards.
The rebar problem was discovered when two of the bars failed. After reviewing all the rebar on site, the design, inspection and construction team determined that the larger bars were improperly bent in the fabrication shop. Independent lab testing is being conducted to confirm there is no materials flaw in addition to the fabrication/bending error. Those results are still pending.
The project's structural engineers are conducting an analysis to determine how much of the completed work will need correction. The engineers from Buro Happold and DLR are analyzing each structural element placed to date.
The work under way today is on new portions of the foundation using new rebar fabricated to the correct specifications.
