Lincoln Parks and Recreation staff will conduct a prescribed burn at noon Thursday, March 29 on a section of Wilderness Park near 27th Street and Saltillo Road. Trails south of Rokeby Road will be closed from midday Thursday through Friday. The parking lot near the intersection of South 27th Street and Saltillo Road will be closed all day Thursday and Friday.
The controlled burn may be postponed depending on weather conditions. The area within the controlled burn totals 14 acres of woodland, prairie and savannah. The land to be burned is part of a habitat restoration effort that began 13 years ago. Staff reminds the public to stay clear of the area and to plan detours accordingly if necessary.
Land managers monitor weather and air quality conditions to ensure safe burns. "Each controlled burn is carefully planned with staff and trained volunteers," said Chris Myers, Parks and Recreation Operations Manager. "Fire is a best practice for general restoration of native plant communities. It also increases public safety by reducing the fuel load of plant matter to help reduce the intensity of a wildfire."
