City of Lincoln Parks & Recreation - Outdoor Education & Greenways Volunteering at the Nature Center

Volunteer opportunities include:

• Land Management Group:
  These volunteers help staff maintain the Nature Center land. Typical tasks include chipping trails, plant propagation, preparing for prescribed burns, preparing soil for plantings, planting and watering, weed control, tree removal, and seed gathering. A group meets regularly on Saturday mornings, April through October. Another group interested specifically in working in our garden meets during the growing season on a weekday morning. Special individual projects can be arranged as well, such as assuming responsibility for a small portion of the prairie or a garden.

• Special Events:
  The Nature Center sponsors several special events. These could not be presented without volunteer help. They give volunteers an opportunity to give assistance with a one-time-only commitment. Special events include: Keep Wilderness Park Beautiful (a park clean-up in April), International Migratory Bird Day (2nd Saturday of May), an occasional Herbal Festival, and our Halloween Spooktacular (the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday near Halloween)

• On-Call Volunteers:
  These volunteers agree to be called when we need help with folding the newsletter or staffing the buildings and grounds.

• Citizenship Issues Volunteers:
  High school seniors in the Lincoln Public Schools may fulfill their community service requirements at the Nature Center as part of our Saturday Land Management crew or by caring for our small exhibit animals one day a week.

• Groups:
  Special volunteer projects can be arranged for groups of 10 or less.
