U.S. Coast Guard Memorial

Throughout the history of our Service, from the small corps of individuals who formed the Revenue Cutter Service in 1790, to our current force of highly skilled men and women performing our wide array of missions, the Coast Guard has been a "Shield of Freedom" for the American people. Over the last 213 years, the Coast Guard has defended our country in many diverse ways, shielding it from a wide variety of threats-threats to safety, the environment and our very way of life. On March 1, 2003, the Coast Guard was one of 22 agencies placed in the Department of Homeland Security. As one of the main components of this new department, the Coast Guard is the lead agency for maritime homeland security. Working with the other agencies within the department; local, state and regional partners as well as industry stakeholders, the Coast Guard is working to ensure that the U.S. maritime domain and our vitally important U.S. Marine Transportation System remains safe and secure.

In addition to combating threats to our security, we must ensure that operational excellence is the standard level of performance across our entire mission set. We will do that by adding personnel and acquiring more capable ships, aircraft and equipment. While the road ahead will not be easy because of these increased demands, the men and women in today's Coast Guard stand ready to answer the call. The Coast Guard has much to contribute to the safety and security of our great nation. It is part of our history, our calling and our responsibility.
