Medical Corps Memorial
This medical memorial is dedicated to all the brave men of the medical corps and
naval hospital corps who risk and give their lives in the aid of wounded and ill comrades.
Few people are aware of the personal sacrifices these men face. They eat, sleep,
laugh and cry with their comrades. It is the aid men who remain with the wounded
until his is stabilized and moved to an aid station. He does not become too
close to anyone because of the pain, if a friend dies. They must be careful to
control their fears because others depend on them.
The medics are one of the unsung heroes of war. He is the first person to answer
the call for help. He gives first aid and moves the wounded out of the line of fire.
He is usually unarmed and is the foundation of the medical system. Thousands of
surgeons, nurses, scientists and enlisted medics are part of this system.
The Medical Corps had its beginning during the American Revolution, with available
medical treatment in every war since. During WWII, drugs such as sulfa and
penicillin were discovered and advanced surgical techniques developed. Speedy
treatment is also vital for recovery.
This medical memorial was dedicated in June 2001. It was sponsored by Bill Delaney.
