Special Forces MemorialThe value of coordinating guerilla activities with conventional military operations and the need for peacetime planning and training by the potential sponsor have been recognized by the United States. The unit organized and trained to implement the Army's responsibility in directing guerilla operations is the Airborne Special Forces Group. Special Forces unit's may be called upon to operate during a general, limited, or cold war. In a general war, special forces organize guerilla forces to support conventional military operations under the direction of the theater commander. Their operations generally are conducted in denied (enemy controlled) territory. Limited war operations by special forces could be of a general type with infiltration of special forces detachments of a training nature conducted in a nondenied area with infiltration of indigenous units only. Special forces units can assist in training military personnel in combating guerilla and terrorist activities and subversion. In addition, they may train foreign military personnel in the techniques of guerilla warfare, thus enhancing the defense capability of the nation concerned. When so employed, special forces units supplement the U.S. military assistance groups and Army missions. |
