Sherman Field Forever Project:
Honoring the Past, Building for the Future

“I think a baseball field must be the most beautiful thing in the world.
It's so honest and precise. Every star gets humbled.
Every mediocre player has a great moment.”
- Lowell Cohn in "The Temple of Baseball"

History of Sherman Field
Built in 1947, Sherman Field is a premier baseball facility owned by the City of Lincoln and located at 2nd and South Street. Sherman Field has a long and proud history, having been the home of the Lincoln Chiefs in the ‘40s and ‘50s, with players like Satchel Paige, Nellie Fox and Bobby Shantz.

Since 1961, this historic field has been used for American Legion and state high school baseball games. More than 6,000 boys of summer have learned to win and lose on this field every year. Some of the most well known include Joba Chamberlain and Alex Gordon, both former Huskers now playing Major League Baseball.

Why We Need Improvements
With its rich history, Sherman Field is a favorite venue for players, coaches, fans and sponsors. The playing field is in good condition and the grandstand was renovated in 1997.

However, the restroom, storage and maintenance buildings need to be replaced in order to better serve park users and visitors, and to provide increased efficiencies in the operation and maintenance of the complex.

The Nebraska School Activities Association has committed to using Sherman Field to host state high school baseball tournament games through 2012. Improvements are necessary to continue to host this tournament and attract others, which have a positive impact on Lincoln’s economy.

Opportunity Knocks
The City of Lincoln has committed $500,000 for this project and the Lincoln Parks Foundation is leading a private fundraising campaign to leverage the City’s commitment and seek private donations to complete other improvements which will enhance the complex and preserve it for future generations.
