Now one of Lincoln's premier houses of the Queen Anne style, this house was built
for Professor James A. Beattie in the town of Bethany Heights, on the north edge
of the Cotner College campus. Beattie served as a mathematics professor and as
second president of the College prior to accepting the presidency of Nebraska
State College in Peru, Nebraska. The Samuel Miles family was the second one to
own and occupy the house, from 1901-1945. His son Clarence grew up in the house,
attended Harvard Law School, and became a prominent Lincoln attorney and the city's
Mayor in 1947-1949.
