Now one of Lincoln's premier houses of the Queen Anne style, this house was built for Professor James A. Beattie in the town of Bethany Heights, on the north edge of the Cotner College campus. Beattie served as a mathematics professor and as second president of the College prior to accepting the presidency of Nebraska State College in Peru, Nebraska. The Samuel Miles family was the second one to own and occupy the house, from 1901-1945. His son Clarence grew up in the house, attended Harvard Law School, and became a prominent Lincoln attorney and the city's Mayor in 1947-1949.
