| Bethany was one of several towns founded around new colleges on the eastern outskirts of Nebraska's capital city in the late nineteenth century. From 1890 until 1926, Bethany was an independent, incorporated town with its own government, utilities, and public schools. Emblematic of that town-era is this dignified little Neo-classical building which housed the First State Bank of Bethany from about 1914 until its failure in 1930 during the Great Depression. Later a portion of the building served as Bethany's branch library. | |
