Two of Lincoln's most influential and beloved African-American residents built this house in 1903 and made their home here until 1945. Anna Burckhardt was a well-known artist and art teacher. Her husband Rev. Oliver J. served congregations across Nebraska, was associate chaplain at the State Penitentiary, and helped charter Lincoln's branch of the NAACP in 1918. He supported his family as a porter and waiter.
