Artemas Roberts and A. W. Woods designed Mary and William Jennings Bryan's country mansion with a combination of Queen Anne and Neo-Classical Revival features. While the house is architecturally distinguished, its greater significance derives from William's prominence as a U. S. Congressman, three-time presidential candidate, and durable national political figure. The Bryans gave the house and its ten-acre "farm" to the Methodist Church in 1922 to create a hospital. Upon his death in 1925, the family granted the request that the hospital bear the name "Bryan Memorial Hospital."
