Entrepreneur William Henry Ferguson built his sturdy Renaissance Revival mansion on Capitol Square in 1909-1911, thirty years after coming to Nebraska in a covered wagon. His early efforts in agriculture, innovating in the planting of winter wheat and alfalfa, led to grain dealing and milling and eventual ownership of eighty grain elevators. He was involved in a multitude of local businesses including Beatrice Creamery Company, Yankee Hill Brick Company, and Capital Beach Amusement Park. His Cleveland architects introduced several structural innovations to Lincoln house building, including reinforced concrete floors on the lower levels and steel beams supporting the upper floors.
