First National Bank was Lincoln's first federally chartered bank in 1871 and was
one of the few local banks to survive the turbulent 1890s. In 1910 the bank
replaced its 1870's building on the southeast corner of 10th and O Streets with
an eight-story, steel-frame structure, designed by the Chicago architects
Hyland and Green. For half of a decade the Commercial Style structure was
Lincoln's tallest office building, until it was superceded by two ten-story
structures in 1915 and 1916. (See Security Mutual Building and Terminal
Building.) It remains a handsome example of the national influence of Chicago
architecture.
