University Place remained an independent city until its citizens voted to join Lincoln by annexation in 1926.

The Landmark District is named for Charles F. Creighton, the first chancellor of Nebraska Wesleyan University. The area is both a Lincoln Landmark District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the University Place Historic Residential District.
