Havelock Avenue Landmark District

Havelock Avenue Landmark District

Boundary/Address:
Havelock Avenue from the mid-block alley between 60th and 61st street on the west, to 63rd Street on the east
Designation:
Local Landmark

The Havelock Avenue Landmark District consists of three dozen commercial buildings dating from 1890 through the mid-twentieth century, on both sides of Havelock Avenue from mid-way between 60th and 61st Streets to 63rd Street. The District celebrates the commercial "main street" of the formerly independent town of Havelock, from its founding in 1890 and incorporation in 1890s, through its annexation into Lincoln in 1930. Key structures include the Lancaster Block at 6201 Havelock Avenue of 1890 (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), the Joyo Theater of ca. 1928 (#6102), and the Schmidt Building of 1916 (#6037). Even more important than these individual landmarks is the overall built environment of streets, sidewalks, and continuous building facades which together exemplify a small-town main street of the early 20th century.
