The Lincoln Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting by a Lincoln police officer.
At 1:13 A.M., officers were dispatched to 1745 A Street on a report of a disturbance. The first officer on the scene was an officer who had been engaged in making an unrelated vehicle stop at 18th and A Street. The officer encountered a man who had apparently come out of 1745 A Street and was armed with a knife. During the ensuing contact, this man was shot by the officer. He was transported by ambulance to Bryan/LGH Medical Center West, where he died at approximately 3:30 A.M. today. The deceased is:

Age 38, Date of Birth 9-3-1969
Mr. Gannon has no current permanent address since his release from the Seward County jail on Thursday, December 27, 2007. Mr. Gannon had been serving a sentence for child abuse in Seward County prior to his release.
The circumstances are under investigation, and pursuant to the policies of the police department in officer-involved shootings, the officer is on administrative leave during the department's internal investigation. Since this is an in-custody death, State law requires the appointment of a special prosecutor, and a Grand Jury investigation.
The last time an Lincoln police officer was involved in a fatal shooting was in 1992.
