Police Department
Holiday DWI Project Summary
During the month of December, the Lincoln Police Department joined law enforcement agencies nationwide by participating in the "You Drink & Drive, You Lose" enforcement campaign. The project ran from Monday, December 1, 2008 to Saturday, January 3, 2009. Officers conducted visible enforcement to remove drug and alcohol impaired drivers from our roadways. With an assistance of an overtime grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, on-duty officers were supplemented with additional officers during peak enforcement times.
The number of DWI arrests, during this project, surpassed totals from the last three years:
| 2008: | 207 |
| 2007: | 185 |
| 2006: | 176 |
| 2005: | 173 |
Of those 207 DWI arrests,
| 86 | arrests were DWI-Aggravated (drivers with a BAC over .15) |
| 2 | arrests were over .30 BAC |
| 3 | arrests were for felony DWI violations |
| 8 | arrests were for .02 violations |
| 11 | arrests were for refusal |
This project was just the conclusion to a monumental year for Lincoln Police Department. In 1974, a department record was set with 1,992 DWI arrests. We ended 2008 with 2,253 DWI arrests. Hardworking officers with a dedication of keeping Lincoln streets safe made this possible.
