Weekend Alcohol Saturation Detail
The Lincoln Police Department's Northwest Team will be conducting an Alcohol Saturation Detail over the course of two nights in an effort to remove impaired drivers from the roadway. The detail will run Friday, September 11th and Saturday, September 12th. With college students back in school and a home football game scheduled, many people throughout Lincoln may be participating in late night weekend parties. This atmosphere often leads to increased alcohol consumption. Officers want to ensure that the roadways are safe.
DUI saturation patrols are a vital component in the fight against drunk drivers. These patrols allow law enforcement to have coverage in a large area and target locations that typically have higher numbers of DUI arrests. Officers will be focusing primarily on drivers who are impaired, but will also be looking for other traffic and safety violations. Funding for this increased enforcement is provided by a grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety (NOHS).
The project is part of Lincoln Police Department's continuing effort to combat and deter impaired driving. Last year alone, Lincoln police officers investigated 8,909 traffic accidents, 1,793 which resulted in injury and 6 accidents which resulted in death. Officers also arrested a record 2,215 drivers in 2008 for driving under the influence.
