Project Planned to Impact Underage Drinking
With the University of Nebraska-Lincoln fall semester beginning and several home football games on the schedule, a rise in late night and weekend parties is expected. In the past, many of these parties involved alcohol consumption and were attended by students less than twenty-one years of age. In an effort to impact illegal behaviors, the Lincoln Police Department's Northwest Team has coordinated an underage drinking project. Funding for this increased enforcement is provided by the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.
From August 27, 2010 through September 25, 2010, officers will employ several tactics aimed at reducing both the sale to and consumption of alcohol to minors. Teams of officers will patrol neighborhoods, focusing on party disturbances. In addition, compliance checks are planned at local liquor establishments.
The goal of this project is to reduce youth alcohol-related fatal and serious injury accidents by 10%. The three year average in Lincoln (2007-2009) for youth alcohol-related injury accidents is twenty-one, one of which resulted in a fatality.
