Department Services

Five new Ford cruisers were purchased in 1955/56. All Ford model lines were changed over by 1956 to a 12 volt electrical system. This helped the dependability of the cruisers due to added electrical demands of the radio, siren, and overhead rotating light.

1950: The last year for Jeeps, they were part of the trade-ins for the cruisers.

  • Purchase of 7 1950 Ford cruisers plus trade-ins: $8,886.35 (Vehicles #15, 16, 17, 21, 26, 28, 31)
  • Purchase of 7 motorcycles (Vehicles #1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11) and 3 Harley Davidson three-wheeled servi-car motorcycles plus trade-ins: $8,075.00 (Vehicles #6 a 1951 model, #7 a 1948 model, and #12 a 1948 model)
  • New VHF radios, roof mounted 16" antenna

1951:

  • Purchase of 1 Oldsmobile (Chief's car Vehicle #18): $1,550.00.
  • Purchase of 3 Ford cruisers (Vehicles #20, 22, 27): $3,914.52
  • Purchase of 1 International Harvester Company (IHC) truck (Vehicle #14). Used by the Traffic Maintenance Department: $1,310.20

1952: No vehicle purchases listed in the Annual Report.

1953: Vehicle #32, an Electrician's truck shows up on the list of department vehicles.

  • Purchase 1 used tow truck (Vehicle #35): $1,675.00
  • Purchase 4 Ford cruisers (Vehicles #23, 24, 25, 30): $5,514.28
  • Purchase 1 Harley Davidson servi-car (Vehicle #34 a 1953 model): $1,817.70
  • Purchase 1 used Harley Davidson servi-car (Vehicle #33 a 1944 model): $490.00

1954: Vehicle #31, a 1950 Ford was traded in as part of the purchase of the 3 Chevrolets however, was repurchased by the department for $375.00. New motors were installed in vehicles #7 a 1948 Harley servi-car, #8 a 1950 Harley Davidson motorcycle, and #12 a 1948 Harley servi-car. Paint truck # 14 and Vehicle #34, a 1953 Harley servi-car, swap vehicle numbers. The 1944 Harley Davidson servi car purchased in 1953 and assigned number 33 was now re-numbered as #13. (Number 13 had been previously assigned to the Cushman Putt-putt in 1948).

  • Purchase 3 1954 Chevrolet sedan cruisers (Vehicles #26, 29, 36): $3,644.00
  • Purchase 1 1954 Cushman Truckster (Assigned Vehicle number 33): $495.00

1955: "POLICE" marking moved from roof to front of hood.

  • Purchased 3 1955 Ford cruisers (Vehicles #15, 21, 31) Number 31 was the 1950 Ford that the department had repurchased the previous year for $375.00
  • Purchased 3 Harley Davidson motorcycles: $1,940.50 (Only two motorcycles, # 2 and 3, show up on the list of department vehicles as 1955 models)
  • Purchased 1 IHC truck with ladder for the Electrician: $1,025.04

1956: Tow truck (Vehicle #35) was transferred to the City Garage.

  • Purchase 5 1956 Ford cruisers (Vehicles #16, 17, 20, 22, 28): unknown cost.
  • Purchase 3 1957 Fords (Vehicles #19, 27, 30): unknown cost.

1957: Three Fords purchased and one Mercury for the chief.
