Pollution Reducing Parking Lot
Mayor Coleen J. Seng recently participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the improvements of a parking lot located in the Havelock business district. The lot is the city's first use of a bioretention cell system, which uses special plants in a conditioned soil bed to treat and manage stormwater runoff. In addition to slowing runoff and improving storm water quality, the system also creates a garden to attract butterflies and birds. Bioretention cells will continue to be used in future parking lot projects.

Award Received for Haymarket Garage Design
The City of Lincoln Parking System received an honorable mention award for the Haymarket Garage at the 2005 International Parking Awards Competition. The award was given for best design of a parking facility with less than 800 spaces. One distinctive feature of this garage is the potential for mixed use. A 3,000 square foot retail space is located on the lower level of the garage where Coaches Corner, a sports bar and hair salon, will be opening soon. The architectural design and lighting of the garage is also unique. The exterior was designed to complement the storefront character of the Historic Haymarket District by using red brick and stone. In the same manner, old fashioned light fixtures were used on "Q" street to maintain the Historic Haymarket theme and beacon type fixtures were used on 9th street to reinforce a sense of entry to downtown Lincoln.
