Use this guide with the map for your School District. How well does your student understand the school routes and the safest way to school?
- The arrow should point away from you. This indicates the direction
north. - Find the striped area on the map. This is the school location.
- Put a dot at the location of your home.
- Ask your student to show the way to school.
- Do you follow a route marked with arrow? Authorized major school routes are marked with small arrows:

- Ask your student other questions about the map area.
- Do you know where the school crosswalks are?
- Find the location of a friend's house who lives on the other side of the school area. What route should the friend follow to school?

- Review these safety tips with your student:
- Look all ways before crossing. Watch for turning cars. Cross in crosswalks. Never step into the street between parked cars. Make sure traffic is slowing down to a stop before you cross the street. Watch the traffic as you cross. Walk, don't run, across the street. Bikes must be walked in pedestrian crosswalks. Bike riders must follow the rules of the road. Keep your school work and paper in a sack so they won't blow into the street. In bad weather wear bright colors. In bad weather allow extra time for traffic to stop. Allow enough time to get to school, but better later than unsafe. CHOOSE TO CROSS SAFELY!!
If you drive your student to school, comply with your school's voluntary traffic patterns and parking restrictions. The pedestrian students are relying on you too!
