10th and Salt Creek Bridge Project
Reconstruction of the 10th and Salt Creek bridge project by Hawkins Construction Company is tentatively scheduled to begin May 8, 2017 and be completed in mid-2018.
Purpose and Need
The existing North 10th Street bridge over Salt Creek is located between Military Road and Sun Valley Boulevard and provides a connection for residences and businesses located on opposite sides of Salt Creek in the North Bottoms and Belmont neighborhoods. The bridge also provides access to the University of Nebraska campus and downtown Lincoln from locations north of Salt Creek.
A recent structural evaluation has determined that the bridge would need to be replaced in order to meet the City of Lincoln's current and future vehicular and pedestrian needs. The proposed project would include removing the existing bridge and constructing a new bridge at the current location. The new bridge would consist of one northbound lane, one southbound lane and a southbound left-turn lane as well as a sidewalk on the east side of the bridge. Construction of the new bridge would also require reconstruction of the North 10th Street & Military Road intersection just south of the bridge. An additional component of the project would include construction of a permanent trail connector between the Haymarket Ball Park Trail and the northeast corner of the North 10th Street & Military Road intersection. The new connector would enhance trail connectivity to the University of Nebraska and downtown Lincoln.
The project would require vehicular detour routes during construction. Access to residences and businesses in the vicinity of the project would be maintained for local traffic. The proposed project would also require the Haymarket Ballpark Trail to be temporarily routed around the bridge site during construction. Traffic through the North 10th & Military Road intersection would only be detoured during the intersection reconstruction.
Access During Construction
Beginning May 8, 2017, 10th Street will be closed between Military Road and Sun Valley Blvd. Access to residents and businesses in the vicinity will be maintained, but traffic will be detoured via Cornhusker Hwy, Antelope Valley Parkway, and Military Road. In addition, Haymarket Ballpark Trail will be closed during bridge reconstruction and trail traffic will be detoured via 9th Street, Court Street, 10th Street, and Military Road.
