Bids were received on this intersection safety project in October of 2007. This allowed time to prepare contract documents and remove trees in the median between 9th and 10th streets prior to bird nesting season. The contract was awarded to TCW Construction, Inc.
Although trees were removed in early 2008, pavement removal and intersection reconstruction began in March. Construction is expected to be substantially complete by August 2008, assuming no significant adverse weather.

Project History
The City of Lincoln, with support from the Nebraska Department of Roads, is modifying the intersections of 9th/Van Dorn Street and 10th/Van Dorn Street to address ongoing safety concerns.
The project will re-configure the intersections of 9th and 10th streets with Van Dorn to accommodate the high volume semi-trailer and passenger traffic in the area. The project will include realigned dual left-turn lanes to replace the existing northbound single left-turn lane at 10th/Van Dorn Street. Existing traffic signals will be renovated to meet new intersection configuration, ITS applications will be installed to optimize operations and safety, and sidewalks and crossings will be addressed.
The City of Lincoln worked with HDR, a consulting engineering design firm, to complete roadway and traffic plans for construction. As part of this process, the surrounding residents, business owners and general public were invited to public meetings to provide feedback on the project.
