"P" St. Streetscape Project

11th Street to Centennial Mall

April 25, 2014 Construction Update

The weather has provided some challenges to the construction activities during the last week. In order to stay on track and continue to progress, the advanced work in additional phases of the project has been started. As the work continues to advance into these areas, please remember that all businesses remain open throughout the course of the project. Sidewalk closures do continue to change on a regular basis so please pay attention to the pedestrian routing that is in place when trying to access a particular business.

The Downtown Lincoln Association hosted the spring 2014 Shop the Blocks event, which took place last night, Thursday, April 24. Many of the local businesses featured were located in areas where the streetscape project has affected parking and sidewalks. The event took place without any issues and it sounds like it was a success.

Work along the south side of the street between 11th Street and 12th Street is taking place to install the light pole bases. Unforeseen conditions underground have caused some delays, but solutions are being determined and the crew continues to work to finish these locations.

Work along the south side of the street from 12th Street to 13th Street continues. The southwest corner of 13th Street is nearly complete with light pole bases, planting areas, and a bioretention area to be finished. This work can be expected to take place over the next week.

The south side of the street between 13th and 14th Streets continues. The contractor has been maintaining a pedestrian corridor along this block, allowing access to businesses while they complete work with the underground silva cells and parking setback areas. The weather has delayed the completion of the driveway to the University Square parking garage. The east exit lane of the garage will be completed today and opened as soon as the concrete has sufficient cure. The completion of the underground silva cells and bioretention areas around the Rococo Theatre are taking place, while having to carefully work around utilities and basements. The paving and curb along "P" St. at the southeast corner of 13th St. is taking place today.

The pavement and sidewalk on the east side of 14th Street from "O" to "P" Streets is removed. The contractor has poured sidewalk and is maintaining a pedestrian corridor with access to all businesses while they complete the work with the underground silva cells and parking setback areas. Coordination between the project work and some private utility relocations has made the work slow down. The contractor has also begun with the sidewalk on the south side of "P" Street from 14th Street to Centennial Mall. They will perform this sidewalk replacement and storm sewer work to coordinate with the Centennial Mall closure. Crews will continue to work on these areas during the next week while trying to deal with the spring weather that is occurring.

The intersection of "P" Street and Centennial Mall is currently reduced to one lane with all traffic shifted to the north side of "P" Street. Work is scheduled to be complete by May 13. The contractor has poured two of the major portions of the intersection during the last week, despite the weather, and will continue to pour today and tomorrow to try to complete as much concrete work as possible, while keeping an eye on the weather forecast. The signal at Centennial Mall is turned off for the duration of this work allowing traffic to move through the intersection with less restriction. The pedestrian crossings are closed and pedestrians are being detoured to the nearest signalized intersections. The Nebraska History Museum and the Lincoln Children's Museum will be open and accessible for the duration of this work.

The north side of "P" Street from 11th Street to 12th Street is under construction as of last Monday, April 21. The contractor has begun to demolish pavement and sidewalk. This will allow the beginning of the work to install storm sewer and to restore the pedestrian corridor along the businesses. The sidewalk route is currently indicated with signs and barricades, and takes pedestrians out into the parking areas through this block. As always, access to all businesses will be maintained through the duration of this work.
