Open House on Long Range Transportation Plan Set for May
An open house Wednesday, May 3 on the City's Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) is an opportunity to share your thoughts on the future transportation changes you'd like to see. The meeting is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at 531 Westgate Boulevard, Suite 100, the Engineering Services Office of the City Public Works and Utilities Department. At the open house, participants will be able to view eight transportation plans developed by the City with the associated costs. The Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission will choose one by the end of May based on recommendations and public input.
Three other public meetings on the LRTP are set for May:
- Transit Development Plan open houses are set for Thursday May 11, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Energy Square, 1111 'O' Street, Room 101, and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bennett Martin Public Library, 136 South 14th Street.
- The Planning Commission will have a public forum on the LRTP roadway alternatives at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 in the Council Chambers at the County City Building, 555 South 10th Street.
The LRTP is part of the current Lincoln-Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan
adopted in May 2002. The plan is a common vision to guide future development. Federal government requirements created the need to update the plan. Staff from the Public Works and Planning departments are scheduled to finish Lincoln's update by the end of this year.
Estimates are that by the year 2030, Lincoln will see 500,000 more trips on its streets every day. Projections also show that Lincoln's population in 2030 will be 353,000 (an increase of 127,000 since 2000), and Lancaster County's population will be 391,000 (an increase of 141,000 since 2000). Those estimates are based on a population growth rate of 1.5 percent a year.
The major transportation areas included in the Comprehensive Plan/LRTP are pedestrian and bicycle facilities; transit; roads and streets; intelligent transportation systems (using technology to improve traffic safety and efficiency); system management or maintenance; railroads; airports; and goods and freight.
In addition to attending the public meetings, citizens can share their comments on the Comprehensive Plan and LRTP online through the City Web site at lincoln.ne.gov (keyword: lrtp); through e-mail to plan@lincoln.ne.gov; or by fax at 441-6377. Residents also can be included on a mailing list by calling 441-7491.
