Replacement and improvements of the existing telemetry system for the Wastewater Collection System and Stormwater System Lift Station pumping operations is beginning. The lift stations are at key locations in the Wastewater Collection System and key lower locations in the Stormwater System. These lift stations pump wastewater and stormwater to higher elevations, allowing discharge to flow downstream to stormwater lines, wastewater sanitary sewers and eventually the City's wastewater treatment facilities. Currently, there are fourteen (14) wastewater lift stations and four (4) stormwater pumping stations that are monitored in the City.
The existing telemetry system for remote monitoring and controlling of the Lift Stations is being replaced with updated and newer technology that utilizes a more reliable radio telemetry communication system than the current hard-wired telephone system. The effective monitoring of pumping systems status at these stations is critical to maintaining proper and reliable service to protect the public health, safety and environment for the citizens of Lincoln. The updated remote monitoring improvements provide for greater security of these locations and operations, and allows maintenance staff to monitor and react more quickly to any pumping system alarms or failures. This remote capability reduces the risk for flooding, sanitary sewer overflows or backups of wastewater into upstream private property or residences served by the lift stations.
A unique challenge of this project is that continuous service of the wastewater pumping systems must be maintained while the telemetry replacements and improvements are being made at each of the stations. Currently, work is proceeding on a phased basis at each of the stations to ensure that service is maintained. Telemetry improvements were completed for two of the larger wastewater lift stations earlier in 2007.
