NE Facility Grit Handling and Primary Pump Station Improvements

Northeast Wastewater Treatment Facility
Grit Handling and Primary Pump Station Improvements

Project No. 502512 - Construction Project Update - November 2010

PDF Version of Map (201 K)

Construction work on the improvements project to the grit handling facilities and primary pump station at the Northeast Wastewater Treatment Facility began in August, 2010. The existing grit equipment and process are over 30 years old and are being upgraded and replaced with newer equipment and process technology.

The grit improvements include: installation of new grit classification, cleaning, washing and conveyance handling equipment. The existing grit tankage and process building will be modified to accommodate the new grit system. An addition to the existing building will house the cleaning, conveyance, handling and load out system. The new system will collect and remove a larger amount of smaller grit particles from the wastewater flow and decrease the moisture content of the washed grit when compared to the old system. These improvements will benefit other downstream pumping and process equipment at the treatment facility by reducing overall wear and increasing the operating life of such equipment.

Improvements to the existing primary pump station include replacement of existing pumps, piping and electrical motor control center located in the pump station building with new and more energy efficient pumps and motor control equipment.

Unique and critical operational requirements for the construction of this project included providing for continuous and uninterrupted operation and treatment of wastewater to meet effluent permit limits and capability to provide treated wastewater effluent to and receive return cooling water flows from the LES Terry Bundy Generating Station during the construction.

During the design of the project, wastewater operational staff, the consulting design engineers and LES Electrical Generating staff worked closely to develop specific methods and procedures so that construction work could occur in a timely manner and comply with these operational requirements.

This project is being funded by a combination of Clean Water State Revolving Loan Funds (CWSRF) that are administered by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality and Sanitary Sewer User Fee Revenue Funds. The project is scheduled to be complete and fully operational in November, 2011.
