Phase V Background
Phase V is the fifth phase of the multi-phased Salt Valley Relief Trunk Sewer project that began at the Theresa Street facility and provides relief and additional flow capacity necessary to meet future growth in south and southwest Lincoln. This project consists of 60-inch diameter and 48-inch diameter pipe that connects to Phase IV on the north and runs south to connect with an existing 48-inch trunk line south of Old Cheney Road.
The route of this 60-inch line begins just south of Pioneers Boulevard and generally runs south along the east side of the new Jamaica North Trail and Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railway track east of Wilderness Park.
Approximately 1,300 feet north of Old Cheney, the line crosses under the BNSF railroad and follows the route of the trail to approximately 500 feet south of Old Cheney where the 60-inch diameter portion of the line ends. At this point, a junction structure will be constructed and a 48-inch diameter line will be installed under the BNSF railroad line and connect to the existing 48-inch trunk line that is located on the east side of the BNSF rail line.
Trenchless tunneling technology will be utilized for the two undercrossings of the BNSF railroad line and Old Cheney Road. This tunneling method of construction will allow for railroad operations and traffic on Old Cheney Road to continue with minimal disruption. The construction of the line will have a temporary impact to the users of the Jamaica North Trail that is located just east of Wilderness Park.
The alignment for this trunk line is located on property owned by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Nebraska Department of Roads, BNSF, and the City of Lincoln. The design has been closely coordinated with the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Nebraska Department of Roads, BNSF,Wilderness Park representatives, Lancaster County, affected utilities along the route, and the City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department.
