Construction of advanced treatment process and capacity improvements to the Lincoln Wastewater System's Theresa St. Wastewater Treatment Facility to remove ammonia and increase capacity to meet new National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit limits is underway. The improvements provide additional capacity for meeting future growth requirements and the City's continuing obligations to protect the public health and the environment. When improvements are complete the total treatment capacity will be 27.4 million gallons per day.

The largest portion of the improvements is construction of a new central treatment train process that utilizes an advanced form of the current Activated Sludge (AS) treatment process. The construction project also includes modifications and improvements to the existing east and west side treatment trains to provide for nitrification treatment of the wastewaters. New Central Train - Final Clarifier Basin and clarifier mechanism

A unique phased construction plan and schedule, developed by the design engineer and city treatment facilities staff during the design, allows for the new central train facilities and existing treatment improvements to be constructed, while maintaining treatment of daily wastewater flows by using the remaining existing treatment process trains and facilities.
