About the Project

This water tower was originally identified in the City's CIP to be built in 2012. Due to rapid commercial growth in southeast Lincoln, the need for the tower became more urgent and moved up in the CIP.

While this area is currently served by a booster pump station with a backup generator, there is no water storage in this pressure district. When there is a disruption in power, there is a slight delay in startup of the generator, and some businesses experience a decrease in water pressure.

The water tower will solve this problem by providing consistent pressure throughout the Cheney Pressure District. It provides the ability to expand the serviceable area of the district, and adds storage to meet peak fire demands.

The new Cheney Tank will not be dependent on continuous electrical power to deliver water.

Q and A

Q. Why is the tank elevated?
A. Since gravity generates pressure, tanks are built on higher ground than the area it serves. In this case, the location of the Cheney Tank is already at the area's highest elevation and needed to be raised to a tower.
Q. What area does it serve?
A. The Cheney Tank will serve the area shaded in gray on the map, and future areas southeast of Lincoln as the city continues to grow. The tank is located on one of the highest points in Lancaster County.
