Beal Slough Flood Protection at 14th and Hwy. 2

Open House about a Public Improvement Project
Near 14th and Hwy. 2 Set for August 31

Project Area Map

You're invited to an open house on the proposed design of flood reduction measures to Beal Slough at S. 14th Street and Hwy. 2 near the Nebraska State Penitentiary and the redesign of the S. 14th Street Bridge over Beal Slough.

The meeting/open house will be held Tuesday, August 31, from 5 - 6:30 p.m., at Bess Dodson Walt Library, 6701 South 14th Street.

The goals of the project are to:

  • Reduce the extent of the floodplain at the Nebraska State Penitentiary and on properties upstream of S. 14th Street
  • Stabilize the bed and banks of Beal Slough

The project includes channel improvements, a low water crossing, channel stability measures, and reconstruction of the S. 14th Street Bridge over Beal Slough, located just north of the intersection of S. 14th Street and Center Park Road. Plans for the roadway construction phasing will be shared at this meeting. During bridge construction, two lanes of traffic will be open (one northbound, one southbound).

Construction is expected to begin in early 2011.

At the open house, representatives of the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District (NRD), City of Lincoln, and project consultants will be available to discuss the proposed design and answer questions.

If you have any questions or are unable to attend and would like information, please contact: Carter Hubbard with Olsson Associates at 402-458-5948, Ed Ubben with the Lower Platte South NRD at 402-476-2729, or Devin Biesecker with the City of Lincoln at 402-441-4955.
