How to Build a Rain Garden

Building your own rain garden is easier than it may seem. To begin, it is strongly suggested that you read the series of three NebGuides created by University of Nebraska-Extension. The NebGuides will teach you how to design your rain garden (877 K) Acrobat Document, install your rain garden (877 K) Acrobat Document, and choose appropriate plants for your rain garden (877 K) Acrobat Document.

The City of Lincoln has installed a 17 homeowner rain gardens, 1 rain garden at Lincoln Christian School, 1 rain garden at Park Place Estates (see how-to photos), and 1 pending rain garden installation at Maxey Elementary School, all within the Holmes Lake Watershed. The installation of rain gardens was part of a larger project called the Holmes Lake Watershed Water Quality Improvement Program, which was initiated to create awareness and introduce rain gardens and other lawn care practices to homeowners that could make a positive impact on water quality. The rain garden installations below were part of this program.
