What is a BMP?
Best Management Practices (BMP) are structural and nonstructural stormwater management control measures taken to mitigate changes to both quantity and quality of runoff caused through changes to land use. Generally BMPs focus on increased impervious surfaces from development. BMPs are designed to reduce volume, peak flows, and non-point source pollution through infiltration, detention, evapotranspiration, and filtration or biological and chemical actions. Examples of Structural BMPs include biorention cells, rain barrels, rain gardens, pervious concrete and porous asphalt, infiltration trenches, vegetated riparian buffers, and green roofs.
