Silko (retired)

1998 Silko trading card

Silko was a German Shepherd born in West Germany in 1991. He was imported from Germany in 1994 specifically for the Sheriff's Office after achieving the title of Schutzhund III. Once in the U.S., Silko was trained in drug detection at Rudy Drexler's School for Dogs in Elkhart, Indiana. Silko also achieved D.P.O. 1 through certification with the Nebraska State Patrol.

Silko was primarily assigned to Deputy Tom Trotter, an LSO veteran since 1994. Silko retired from service, in October 2000, after having been on patrol since 1994. In that time the pair had made numerous arrests through drug searches, building searches and tracking criminals.

After an eight month battle with cancer, Silko died in July of 2001. No longer a dog handler, Trotter is currently assigned as a Sergeant in the patrol division and served as the Office K9 Unit supervisor from 2001 until 2006.
