County Sheriff
Special Services Division
The Special Services Division is commanded by Captain Joseph Lefler. The division
is staffed by twenty-four employees; the captain,
two sergeants, 8 commissioned deputy sheriffs, 8 special-commissioned security
officers, and 5 non-commissioned court officers.
| The Special Services Division provides security for the County/City
building complex which consists of three buildings; the County/City Building,
the Justice and Law Enforcement Center, and the Lancaster County Correctional
building. Part of the building security is maintaining, monitoring and
responding to the various alarms and video equipment throughout the three buildings.
This is primarily the responsibility of seven special-commissioned security
officers assisted by deputies and court officers. An X-ray machine and several
metal detectors are in use throughout the complex. |
| Deputies provide security for the seven District Courtrooms, one
District Court Referee, three Juvenile Courtrooms, and seven County
Courtrooms. Deputies assigned to the Special Services Division are called upon to
plan security for "high profile trials" and sequestered juries. During special trials
and empaneled juries certain sworn deputies act as special bailiffs. A small number
of deputies are sworn each year to act as special bailiffs for grand juries.

The primary duty of the five non-commissioned court officers is transportation
of prisoners to various facilities, both mental and criminal. This includes extradition
of prisoners from outside the state of Nebraska and all transportation
of people arrested on warrants within the state as well as court ordered
transports. They are assisted by deputies and security officers on an
on-call basis. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office averages 2,000 transports
a year.
| Special Services is also responsible for title inspections of vehicles coming
into Lancaster County from out of state. The title inspection station at 625 N. 46th Street is
staffed by a commissioned deputy and assisted by court officers. Lancaster
County averages 12,000 title inspections a year. |
