Being Better Parents

Purpose of the Program

Being Better Parents is a program providing parent support and education through a curriculum designed for battered women. The purpose of the program is to decrease some of the stress and frustration battered women face as parents and provide an opportunity for their children to grow up in a safe environment. The program was created with the understanding that domestic violence affects everyone in the home either directly or indirectly.

The groups are facilitated by staff who have both the understanding of living in an abusive home and the understanding of child development and parenting issues.

Educational Component.

The Being Better Parents program includes two components. The first is a 6 week parenting group which focuses on skill building and discussion of various parenting topics such as

Support Component.

In addition to the parenting class, there is also a weekly parent support group. This group allows women a place to discuss parenting issues in a supportive environment.

Who Should Attend?

Because all parents need support at various times, Being Better Parents is open to any women who currently has custody or unsupervised visitation with her children (ages 0 to 19 years). Women may be at any stage in an abusive relationship, either current or past.

Time and Place.

The Being Better Parents educational class will be held every Monday evening from 6:00 until 7:30. Sessions for the educational class rotate every 7 weeks. Participants can begin the education class at anytime, but must register before coming to their first class. Attendance at all 6 sessions is recommended.

The Being Better Parents support group is held every Monday afternoon from 1:00 until 2:30. This is a drop in group and anyone can come at any time. However, it is recommended that members complete the Being Better Parents educational group first.

Both groups are free of charge and child care is provided for children over the at of 6 months. All women are welcome to participate whether you are struggling tremendously with parenting issues or just needing a little support.
