The first meeting of the Lancaster County Board of Commissioners was held on January 15, 1864. Original records from this first Board meeting to the present are on file in the County Clerk's office. These records are also on microfilm and are available for viewing by the public. They present a fascinating account of the early days and development of the County and surrounding areas. The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners meets each Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in the County Commissioners Chambers in the County-City Building at 555 South 10th Street in Lincoln. At this same meeting, the Board also holds the Board of Equalization meeting, which immediately follows the regular Board meeting. The Lancaster County Board of Commissioners also hold a staff meeting each Thursday at 8:30 a.m., in Conference Room 113 in the County-City Building at 555 South 10th Street in Lincoln. Each week the Board of Commissioners approves claims for payment that have been audited by the County Clerk's Accounting Division. There are usually a number of other items that appear regularly on the agenda including bid openings, public hearings and approval of contracts. Documentation for each item on the Board of Commissioners agenda is available for public inspection at the County Clerk's office. The law allows for the Board to go into Executive Session to discuss personnel matters or litigation issues. These Executive Sessions are closed to the public; however, the Board may not take any official action while it is in Executive Session.
Any citizen may place an item on the County Board's agenda by calling the County Clerk's office at least 24 hours prior to the meeting (441-7481). Citizens also have the right to speak during the meeting regarding agenda items. If you are interested in following the County Board proceedings, but are unable to attend, the meetings are televised live on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. on 5 City-TV, Cable Channel 5. The meeting is rebroadcast at 6:30 p.m. the same day, and again on Saturday afternoon immediately following the City Council meeting rebroadcast at 1 p.m. You can also access this meeting on the Internet, 24 hours a day, at http://www.lancaster.ne.gov. Interpreters for the hearing impaired are available at the meetings of the County Board upon request. Please contact the County Clerk's office at 441-7481 at least 48 hours prior to the meeting if this accommodation is required, or if you have any other special communication needs requiring assistance. Telex Sound Masters are also available for audio enhancement during the meeting.
Citizens can request transcripts of discussions held during the Board of Commissioners meetings. The cost for providing these transcripts is $1.50 per page. We can also provide audio cassettes at $5/cassette or video tapes of Board meetings upon request at a cost of $10 per tape.
