Elevation contours digitized as lines can be converted to a raster format; or a series of pixels ("picture elements") at various intervals. This sample shows a lattice created from the contours and color coded so that a "ramped" effect of color (yellow=low, red=high) would convey the rise in topography. Additional map elements such as roads can be added to highlight the mapped area.
