The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a three vehicle fatal crash occurring at the intersection of Highway 34 and North 148th Street at 1144 hours on 06/02/2007.

Preliminary investigation indicates a northbound 1990 brown Honda Civic, driven by 17 year-old Kellie Bate of rural Lincoln, Nebraska, entered the intersection and struck a westbound vehicle, a 2000 red Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by 39 year-old Marcia Hunter of Pleasant Dale, Nebraska. The intersection is guarded by north and southbound stop signs. Upon this impact, the Grand Caravan then veered into the eastbound lanes and collided nearly head-on with an eastbound 2002 Honda Sabre motorcycle driven by 44 year-old Todd Herndon of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Herndon was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Kellie Bate was not injured. A 50 year-old passenger in the Civic also was not injured.

Marcia Hunter suffered minor injuries due to airbag deployment, but was not transported. A passenger in the Grand Caravan, 59 year-old Trudy Odvody of Pleasant Dale, Nebraska, was transported by ambulance to Bryan LGH West hospital with rib pain and admitted for observation. A 5 year-old passenger in the Grand Caravan was not injured.

Airbags deployed in the Grand Caravan but were not present in the Civic. All occupants of both the Grand Caravan and Civic were wearing seat belts. Herndon was wearing an approved motorcycle helmet. Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected at this time.

The accident is being investigated by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. Medical personnel from Eagle/Alvo Volunteer Fire and Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.

No citations have been issued at this time. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Next of kin have been notified.
